Guwahati is believed to have been the capital city of many kingdoms during prehistoric times. If the writings in the Mahabharata are to be believed, the city was the capital of the Narakasura and Bhagadatta kingdoms. According to the Ambari excavations, Guwahati was under the rule of Shunga-Kushana dynasty between 2nd Century BC and 1st Century AD.
