How to Be Prepared For a Trip With Child

Packing For Your Child

When going on a trip with a young child, packing appropriately can make all the difference. Be sure to pack at least 2-3 full changes of clothes per day, as accidents and spills are inevitable. Bring plenty of diapers, wipes, changing pad, and plastic bags as well. Pack some of your child's favourite non-perishable snacks, a few small toys, books, colouring supplies, etc. Things that comfort your child at home will help comfort them while travelling. If your child uses specific ointments or medications or has other special needs, pack at least twice the amount you think you'll use.

Choosing Accommodations

Look for family-friendly lodging, preferably with kitchenettes and laundry facilities. Hotels with indoor pools and playgrounds are great for keeping kids entertained. Request cribs or extra beds from the hotel in advance. Choose a location central to the things you want to see and do. Research family-friendly restaurants nearby beforehand.

Preparing Your Child

Before the trip:

  1. Start adjusting your child's routine to mirror what it will be during travel.
  2. Gradually shift bedtime and mealtimes, expose your child to some background noise resembling travel hubs.
  3. Explain what travel days will entail in terms your child understands.
  4. Make them excited about your destination by watching videos, looking at photos, reading books, etc.

In-Transit Tips

When flying with young kids, reserve bulkhead seats or splurge on extra legroom. Bring your child's car seat onboard rather than checking it. Pack familiar snacks. Load phones, tablets, and headphones with new apps, games, videos and music. Bring toys, books and activity/ coloring books they haven't seen before. Request kid-friendly meals. Let kids wear comfy travel clothes. Prepare wipes, paper towels, plastic bags. Utilize early boarding, pre-board security lanes, and stroller services.

Preventing Problems

To avoid ear discomfort during flights:

  1. Give your child something to suck on like a pacifier or lollipop during takeoff and landing.
  2. Encourage them to yawn and chew gum.
  3. Distract kids with games and toys.
  4. Stay hydrated and move around whenever possible.
  5. Dress kids in layers so you can adjust clothes as needed.
  6. Use hand sanitizer.
  7. Wash hands frequently and avoid touching faces.
  8. Get seats over the wings for a smoother ride.
  9. Request a bassinet for infants to sleep in.

Hopefully, these tips help you feel organized and prepared for a smooth, enjoyable trip with your little one! Let me know if you need any other advice for travelling with children.
